SOLD

An incredible large antique Japanese merchant Todana Tansu (storage chest with doors and drawers) in 2 sections made of Keyaki (Zelkova) and Sugi (Cryptomeria) woods. Originally used in a Japanese store to stock and display wares and supplies as well as provide a beautiful functional furniture accent for the merchant. Original hand made iron locks that were used to secure the contents when the store was closed.

Constructed using mortise and tenon joinery as well as floating wood panels which minimizes the wood from cracking. The upper doors feature bronze handles to depict a flying Phoenix above a Chrysanthemum blossom while the lower door handles depict a stylized half Chrysanthemum next to a river stream with leaves of Mums below. Each section has side carrying handles that swivel up allowing a strong wood pole to pass through making it easier for two persons to carry them about.

Contemporary uses would include using this chest as a room centerpiece which also functions as a spacious storage cabinet or an entertainment center that stores equipment and accessories while hiding a television behind the doors.

Stunning orinal finish with gorgeous natural glow.

Dimensions: 66 3/4″ Wide by 68 1/4″ High by 19 7/8″ Deep

Age: Late Edo Period (1603 -1868)
