Set of two (2) Chinese hardwood chairs, each with a beautifully carved back featuring a central solid carving within a clover-shape of high-class men and women wearing long-sleeved robes with a background of beautiful structures and plant life. Supporting the central carving at the base are three small children; One middle child crouches low whilst holding a scroll painting, with two children at his sides holding branches. Above the central carving are two large dragons with carved and pierced smoke designs surrounding them and a large ball between their open mouths. The front and sides below the seat are bordered with carved panels featuring more robed men and women, cranes with touching beaks flying above peaches, and lucky bats with coins in their mouths. The chair’s legs are shaped as a lion’s feet clutching a ball, topped with carvings of a taotie or ogre motif without a lower jaw area. The chairs are skillfully carved front to back and are certain to attract attention. circa 1920s-30s

Size: 39.5″ height, 19.25″ width, 18.25″ depth
