Japanese Antique Shibayama Inlaid Lacquer Screen  

Beautiful Japanese carved standing screen with shibayama inlay. This piece has two panels 42" high x 21 1/2" wide set inside it's original highly carved standing wooden screen. The whole screen is 73 3/4"high x 58" wide. The panels are made of wood and are inlaid with floral scenes with many different materials including: carved ivory, gold lacquer, mother of pearl, abalone shell, and coral. The left panel has a hanging vase with an arrangement of peonies, wisteria, magnolia and hydrangea branches, below this is a tripod censor with an ivory fudog shaped lid. The right hand panel has a duck shaped vase with an arrangement of peonies, chrysanthemums, and lilies, all around are butterflies and in the smaller areas below are flowering branches with birds. The back of each panel is also decorated in lacquer and inlaid mother of pearl, and bone with scenes of birds in ginko trees. This is a signed piece from the Meiji Period 19th century. The panels could be taken out and displayed separately if desired.
