Antique Japanese Kyushu Choba (Merchant's Tansu)
Beautiful and rare antique Japanese choba tansu (merchant's chest) with secret compartments and secret locks, from Kyushu area, made of keyaki (elm) wood with kiri (paulownia) wood interior, beautiful translucent red-orange lacquer finish, iron hardware including unusual rings on side of chest, safe box with 3 interior drawers, iron work on safe door includes elaborate cross bracing and drop in door hinges (door is removable), sliding doors reveal four interior drawers (and secret compartments!), Edo Period (late 18th / early 19th century).
