Description

Pair of antique Japanese dolls of a standing onna-bugeisha (female samurai) and her travel companion kneeling at her side, holding her bundled baby. The onna-bugeisha holds a large bow with a quiver of arrows on her back. Both dolls are ornately dressed in silk robes and body armor, with fur shoes and real feather arrows. Each doll has its own wooden box, one of which has Japanese writing on its lid. Late 19th century
