Japanese Two Sided Kaidon Tansu, Meiji Period
Japanese single section Kaidon-dansu (step chest), used in a Geishas house as both storage chest and staircase to upper level, this chest is special because it is accessible from either side, made of hinoki (Japanese cypress) wood and sugi (cryptomeria) wood with it's original deep translucent red lacquer finish and iron hardware, Meiji Period (late 19th century). 68 3/4"high x 56 1/2" wide x 36" deep.

Japanese 2-section Kaidon-dansu (step chest) from the Kyoto area, this piece once functioned as both a storage chest and a staircase to the upper level of a Japanese house.
