Chinese Antique Hardwood Screen with Jade Inlay
Antique Chinese 6-panel inlaid lacquer screen framed in hardwood (Huanghuali?). Design of scholar objects, carved jade animals, flower arrangements in archaic motif vases, and a pair of cloisonne and gilt animals at the bottom center all on black lacquer ground. The back side is black lacquer with series of medallions with different designs interspersed with flowers. 19th century.

Chinese Antique Root Wood Bench
Antique Chinese bench made of root wood, hardwood seat, very elaborate natural form root wood, dark finish, 19th century. This type of furniture was highly prized by religious figures and ascetics of the Song Dynasty symbolizing a lack of attachment to earthly goods. This idea was later adopted by Ming literati. The Qianlong emperor chose a suite of rootwood furniture and had his portrait painted in a rootwood chair.
